Four Lands

Four Lands is a portable community arts project inviting participants to express their perspectives on the places they lived, through creating and playing with miniature models of  four imagined lands: Goodland, Badland, Lostland, Dreamland.

The project moved through diverse communities across the country, with each iteration shaped by the people and context of the location. Workshops were open and accessible, welcoming participants of all ages and backgrounds. As Ruth Howard noted, the work depended entirely on those who took part: “If the people didn’t come, there’d be no art.”

Through this process, Four Lands created a space where complex and sometimes difficult questions could be approached indirectly and collectively. The use of small-scale, often playful forms allowed participants to engage with themes such as displacement, loss, memory, and belonging—holding both seriousness and lightness at once.

Each workshop culminated in a temporary installation of the four lands, reflecting the contributions of that particular community. Together, these iterations formed a kind of cross-country portrait—different in every place, yet connected through shared questions and creative process.

As with much of Ruth Howard’s work, Four Lands was less about producing a finished artwork than about creating conditions for participation, reflection, and connection.
